Snakebite has been a major health crisis, especially in developing countries and rural tropical areas. In the year 2017, snakebite was recognized as a priority Neglected Tropical Disease and in response, with the support from UK's Department for International Development (DFID), International Aids Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), along with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Nigeria Snakebite Research & Intervention Centre (Bayero University, Kano), Kenya Snakebite Research & Intervention Centre (Institute of Primate Research, Nairobi), and Scripps Research (La Jolla) united to form a consortium - Scientific Research Partnership for Neglected Tropical Snakebite (SRPNTS). SRPNTS aims at generating safe, effective and affordable next generation snakebite therapies for use across India and Africa.
SRPNTS is looking to convene many of the leading Indian scientists, clinicians, herpetologists, as well as activists, dedicated to the work on snakebites, for a day of in-depth discussion regarding exciting scientific progress in the field as well as policy and advocacy aims that will help make bring about much needed change to address this public health crisis.
